Personality and job choice
by Jess Taylor (May 10, 2006)As a career counselor, one of the tools I like to use is personality tests. While your personality is far from the only thing that can determine your job success, sometimes it can point you in the direction of a career path that you’ve never thought of before.
There are a number of online websites that offer free (and fun!) personality tests, such as the Myers-Briggs test or the Keirsey Temperament sorter. If you’re not sure of the direction you want to go in, take a moment and take a test - you might be surprised by what you find out!

I’m 15 years old and I have no idea what i want to be. I want to make a decent living but I don’t want to be gone for long periods of time away from my family. I love being in the woods and sports.

There are a lot of options - you can always look into conservation efforts, working in sports management if you want to make those careers - or you can keep those hobbies and do something completely different! You have some time to make the decision but you might want to try volunteering now and seeking out internships in different fields.

If you’re attracted to the arts but avoiding advertising and marketing, why not look at other forms of design, such as interior decorating? If helping people appeals to you, there are a number of careers in healthcare or massage therapy. Think about what you enjoy, what’s important to you and then pursue your dream!

If where you are working isn’t willing to work with you, it’s time to look at other companies. If you enjoy the actual work that you do but the hours and money are problems, try applying at other places and seeing if they can offer you more. If you’re not happy at your job - consider what you liked and disliked about each job and make lists. Figure out if there’s something else you’d like to go back to doing. Or prepare yourself to move forward, by applying in a completely different field or preparing yourself with a new education.

I’m 22 with a 4 year old and now, finally, trying to do something with my life. I have no idea where to start or where to go or what to do. I’m HORRIBLE with long-term goals, and need a short program to be a “certified” something-anything…..HELP!
